After Gordon Strachan was sacked by mutual consent following a poor run of form culminating in a defeat at home to Leeds, managerless Middlesbrough lost away games to Nottingham Forest and Norwich both by one goal to nil. Former Boro hero Tony Mowbray had recently been sacked by Celtic so Steve Gibson gave the fans what they clamoured for - Mogga in the Boro hotseat. His first match was a very disappointing home defeat against Bristol City to leave Boro dangerously near the very bottom of the table and this game against Palace, his second seemed to be heading the same way until Tarmo Kink stepped up with an equaliser to inspire Boro to a much needed win.
Ironically, Mowbray had spent his final few months at Celtic getting rid of a load of players from Gordon Strachans time in charge at Parkhead that he didn't rate and possibly even perceived as bad influences in the dressing room. Problem was, Gordon Strachan had shipped them into Middlesbrough so when Mowbray arrived, it was a case of "oh no, not you lot again" !
