1st round 1st Leg of the 1988 Littlewoods Sponsored Capital Carling Cola Milk Cup and a Tees-Wear derby. Boro and Sunderland had just swapped Divisions (Boro being promoted to the 2nd the previous season with Sunderland dropping down to the 3rd) and now faced each other in a mouth-watering first round tie.
Sunderland won the first leg at Roker Park with a goal from Eric Gates and Boro had new signing Dean Glover sent off for elbowing Gary Bennett. This act of wanton violence earned him a ban but more rewardingly everlasting cult-hero status among Middlesbrough supporters.
