Middlesbrough make their first and only appearance in the Guinness Soccer 6 tournament held in Manchesters G-Mex Arena in November 1988. Boro are in a three team group also featuring Southampton and Arsenal with their first game against The Saints. Boro start well taking the lead through Bernie Slaven but soon succumb to The Wallaces and Co losing the match 4-1. Boro didn't have the biggest squad in The First Division but by naming the squad they did for this i.e. including some less than technical players in favour of players probably more suited to a fast moving small sided tight game (Paul Kerr, Peter Davenport) they weren't really giving themselves the best chance here.
